Le titre, l’oeuvre sculpturale ou installative et le lieu d’exposition sont ici considérés comme composants d’une dynamique d’inter-différance tripartite. L’étude s’intéresse aux habitudes de titrage en arts actuels et se fonde sur un vaste corpus d’oeuvres recueilli entre 2002 et 2008 d’où ont été extraites neuf classes de référence et quatre grandes catégories d’appariement entre les trois composants : stabilisation provisoire, détournement hors champ, ambiguïté soutenue et inversion d’un composant à un autre alors que le troisième fracture l’état de tension. Il en ressort des paradigmes majeurs quant aux habitudes de titrage, dont une préférence pour les quiproquos et la métaphore, l’expression récurrente d’inquiétudes et d’incertitudes d’ordre socioculturel, mais aussi un goût partagé pour le jeu (salvateur ?) qui s’entrecroisent au sein d’un ensemble dont les conjonctures sont différées au-delà de (ou sous) quelque spécificité objectale, obligeant le récepteur à lui-même se référer, se différer « ailleurs » pour faire sens avec ce qu’il lit et ce qu’il voit. En cela, il doit lui-même « titrer » la situation.
