Abstract
Le zoo est une institution liée au pouvoir et à l'entreprise coloniale, à travers la représentation de l'ailleurs exotique et du sauvage. Y mettre en scène un animal, c'est y proposer une vision du monde, dont la composante politique est notable. L'article examine dans cette optique le zoo de Mexico, dont l'originalité tient à sa filiation avec une ménagerie préhispanique et son statut postcolonial dans le cadre d'une nation métis. Alors que beaucoup de zoos ont abandonné le discours national au profit d'un discours écologique sans pour autant renoncer clairement à la vision coloniale, le zoo de Mexico ignore presque totalement l'enjeu écologique, et joue la carte de la fierté nationale, avec une ambiguïté qui reflète la complexité de l'identité mexicaine.
