Les personnes du grand âge sont perçues d’emblée comme étant fragiles, sans voix et sans pouvoir. Cet article vient présenter le cadre conceptuel et les résultats d’une recherche portant sur les droits et l’empowermentdes aînés qui vivent dans divers milieux d’hébergement. L’originalité de l’étude découle de son application du concept d’empowermentaux clientèles âgées hébergées. Inspirée des théories constructivistes, l’étude s’attarde à comprendre le sens que les résidents âgés ont construit du « pouvoir » à partir de leur expérience personnelle et cherchent à connaître les stratégies qu’ils développent pour l’exercer au quotidien. Les données recueillies auprès de 20 résidents (15 femmes ; 12 personnes âgées de 80 à 99 ans) démontrent que les stratégies utilisées se situent en continuité avec la trajectoire de vie et sont marquées par l’évitement et le contournement. Les résultats mettent aussi en évidence l’importance des liens sociaux existants pour les personnes âgées et leur conscience du contexte de vulnérabilité dans lequel elles se trouvent.
