Cet article traite des difficultés qu'éprouvent plusieurs futurs enseignants à articuler les domaines de l'arithmétique et de l'algèbre dans un contexte de résolution de problèmes. L'analyse d'entrevues réalisées auprès d'apprentis-enseignants qui mettent spontanément en place une dialectique entre ces domaines de connaissances illustre les différents statuts et rôles que peuvent prendre tour à tour l'arithmétique et l'algèbre dans le processus de résolution de problèmes. Les résultats font ressortir le rapport aux savoirs arithmétique et algébrique qu'il serait souhaitable de retrouver chez les futurs enseignants et les aspects qu'il serait opportun de travailler non seulement avec eux mais aussi avec les élèves.
