Après avoir passé en revue l’état des connaissances sur l’institutionnalisation des sciences religieuses en France (1880-1886), l’article examine les plaidoyers visant à introduire un enseignement d’histoire des religions dans les écoles, lycées et universités. Ces tentatives sont analysées dans leur contexte : la réforme de l’enseignement supérieur et la laïcisation de l’école primaire. Des divisions entre les partisans d’un tel enseignement, la rivalité entre les disciplines et la prudence politique firent que le dossier s’enlisa. Des propositions dans ce sens continuèrent néanmoins à être avancées jusqu’au moment des lois de Séparation. Un contraste est dressé entre la situation française et celle de quelques autres pays européens.
