Abstract
Reposant sur les concepts de valeur symbolique et de légitimité et sur la théorie féministe matérialiste, la lecture proposée ici d’Un habit de lumière (1999), dernier roman d’Anne Hébert, postule que l’auteure met en scène diverses aliénations identitaires ayant partie prenante avec le système capitaliste, ce qui constitue une prise de position vis-à-vis de ce système. Pour chacun des quatre principaux personnages (Rose-Alba Almevida, Pedro Almevida, Miguel Almevida et Jean-Ephrem de la Tour), sont examinés la production économique, les gains obtenus de cette production et l’usage de ces gains, que ce soit en termes de dépense, d’échange ou d’investissement. Ces observations sont mises en rapport avec l’identité de sexe/genre (homme/femme, masculin/féminin), l’identité de classe, l’identité ethnique et l’identité liée au groupe d’âge des personnages, ainsi que l’espace narratif accordé à chacun d’eux.
