Abstract
La pratique de l’inhumation dans l’église a pris racine dans la vallée du Saint-Laurent dès les premiers temps de la colonie, avant de s’estomper peu à peu et finalement de disparaître à partir du dernier tiers du XIXe siècle. Réservé à un petit nombre, le phénomène est associé aux classes aisées et/ou privilégiées. Un examen attentif des individus à qui revient l’honneur d’être inhumés dans l’église, aide à préciser les caractéristiques et la portée sociale de cette pratique, en plus de fournir des outils ou indices pour définir avec plus de précision l’identité élitaire en milieu rural.
