Abstract
Cet article porte sur l’évolution du catholicisme social tel qu’il s’est développé dans les missions depuis les années 1940 et 1950 où l’Action catholique spécialisée était importante jusqu’aux années 1960 qui virent émerger puis se déployer (1970) la théologie de la libération. Il explore les réseaux de pratiques des missionnaires québécois engagés au Brésil, en République dominicaine, au Honduras et au Chili, des réseaux alimentés par la «révision de vie», les coopératives rurales, les communautés ecclésiales de base et la rencontre du christianisme et du socialisme. L’accent est mis sur les liens entre ces réseaux et le mouvement Antigonish de Nouvelle-Écosse, l’éducation aux adultes et les écoles radiophoniques en Amérique latine de même qu’avec certains théologiens réformistes belges et hollandais. Au cours de ces années, la tendance lourde fut d’accroître la participation et la responsabilité des laïcs et des jeunes, le développement communautaire et de renouveler les notions de communauté et de la libération chrétiennes.
