Abstract
L’état de la Confédération canadienne suscite une certaine appréhension chez les observateurs avertis. Certains craignent en effet que des revendications identitaires exprimées par certaines minorités nationales qui composent le Canada ne menacent l’existence ou l’unité de celui-ci. Vu dans cette perspective, le Canada serait donc menacé en tant que pays unifié. Cette lecture que quelques-uns qualifieraient de pessimiste de l’avenir du Canada, projette sur le système fédéral canadien une image (métaphorique) d’une forteresse assiégée en ce sens qu’une partie de la population du Québec (pourtant nation fondatrice du Canada) veut s’en éloigner tandis que le reste des Canadiens (y compris des immigrants et leurs descendants) cherchent à y demeurer. Cependant, il faut demeurer optimiste, car en dépit des craintes exprimées et des événements survenus laissant pourtant craindre le pire, la forteresse du fédéralisme canadien semble toujours bien tenir le coup. Cette stabilité trouve en partie son explication dans les diverses contributions apportées par cette composante sociologique du Canada que sont les immigrants.
