Abstract
Souvent pensée en termes de loisir solitaire (A. Corbin, 1999), la pratique de la collection est pourtant tributaire de l’intégration du collectionneur à divers et nombreux réseaux. Dans cet article, il sera question du rôle essentiel des réseaux de correspondance épistolaire dans la constitution des collections privées à Montréal dans le dernier tiers du xix e siècle. En jetant un regard sur quelques-uns des différents modes d’acquisition des objets de collection, il est possible de constater le caractère fondamental des réseaux de correspondance dans la constitution de collections particulières, mais aussi de cibler les divers acteurs qui composent le réseau de correspondance du collectionneur, notamment des marchands, d’autres collectionneurs, des artistes et des agents de terrain. Il ressortira de cette analyse que cette correspondance écrite est un passage obligé de la pratique de la collection qui confère des avantages, certes, mais qui n’est pas sans comporter certains risques.
