L'émergence du nationalisme canadien-français : l'idéologie du Canadien (1806-1842)

Abstract
À travers une lecture systématique du journal Le Canadien, l'auteur reconstitue l'émergence d'une des premières idéologies qui ait défini la société globale québécoise. La première partie de l'article présente les principales représentations idéologiques du journal et leur évolution d'une dominante libérale à une dominante nationaliste. Selon la lecture proposée, il faut attendre 1836 avant de voir surgir un véritable discours nationaliste, centré sur l'image d'un petit peuple de paysans français et catholiques, soutenu par son clergé. La seconde partie esquisse une interprétation d'ensemble de la genèse du nationalisme au Bas-Canada. Sans nier l'importance d'autres facteurs explicatifs, l'auteur met surtout en évidence l'impact de l'idéologie de la bourgeoisie coloniale dans cette conception nouvelle d'une nation canadienne-« française ».
