Cet article entend revenir sur les quatre tomes d'Iroquoisie de Léo-Paul Desrosiers, récemment parus après un demi-siècle d'oubli. Dans cette œuvre magistrale à plusieurs points de vue, écrite d'une plume alerte, l'auteur pose plusieurs hypothèses qui anticipent les paradigmes historiographiques contemporains. Les auteurs de cet article tentent de revenir sur l'œuvre en l'analysant sous trois rubriques. C'est ainsi qu'ils explorent d'abord l'histoire de Desrosiers et les principaux facteurs qui expliquent un certain silence qui a longtemps entouré son œuvre. Ils analysent ensuite l'œuvre en elle-même, sous l'angle de son érudition archivistique et de ses pistes interprétatives, mais aussi de sa perspective globale. Ils terminent par une critique de l'intention que sert Iroquoisie dans l'économie de l'écriture personnelle du romancier, ainsi que dans la défense des idéologies auxquelles adhérait alors l'intellectuel. De cette analyse se dégage une œuvre convaincante, dont la complexité et les contradictions internes enrichissent la compréhension de l'histoire de la Nouvelle-France plutôt que de la clore sur elle-même ou de l'invalider en son principe même.
