Pour les terminologueshistoriques, le terme s’oppose radicalement au mot. Il est caractérisé par la monosémie, l’univocité, la précision de sa définition et un sens uniquement référentiel faisant de lui une étiquette apposée sur la chose. La terminologie se prétend purement onomasiologique et chargée de la standardisation des langages spécialisés. Or, depuis quelques décennies certains terminologues se sont rapprochés de la linguistique, surtout de la linguistique de corpus, pour construire une terminologie basée sur l’observation des discours, donc sémasiologique, dans laquelle le terme peut être polysémique, avoir des synonymes, avoir un sens influencé par son contexte. Pour eux, l’objectif premier n’est plus la standardisation mais la description des discours spécialisés. Ces nouveaux terminologues ont fait avancer la discipline en la rapprochant de la linguistique et en privilégiant l’observation de faits réels plutôt que l’évocation d’idéaux mais leur rejet des principes de la terminologie classique est peut-être excessif. Nous voulons montrer, en les examinant l’un après l’autre, que ces principes n’ont pas perdu tout intérêt, sur le plan de la langue et sur le plan social, en particulier pour la construction d’outils. Plutôt que d’accentuer les divergences entre les courants, il nous semble donc préférable de revendiquer leur complémentarité.
