Abstract
Ce texte repose sur la perspective selon laquelle la reconnaissance par la loi du droit des femmes à contrôler elles-mêmes leurfécondité constitue une révolution dans « l’appréhension de la différence des sexes » (1ère partie). Pour discuter le point de vuede Lipovetsky (1997) selon lequel la revendication de la parité politique constitue une « régression naturaliste » (2e partie),j’insiste d’abord sur la signification du contrôle de la procréation et les interprétations qu’il inspire. J’illustre ensuite l’artificepolitique qui a présidé à la construction de la mère en démocratie pour revenir enfin à la condition d’accès des femmes à lacitoyenneté moderne. J’aborde en 3e partie la perspective que synthétise Schnapper (1998) dans la formule de la« représentation-miroir ». Tout en partageant son point de vue selon lequel l’arrachement biologique doit prévaloir et dans ladéfinition de la citoyenneté et dans la lutte des femmes pour concrétiser leur égalité avec les hommes, je tente d’établir que laparité est précisément l’option qui consacre l’universalisme. Cela suppose que l’on s’en tienne à l’espace public-politique danslequel les individus sont institués par l’état-civil.
