Wash Pond Sediments (WPS) are manmade deposits derived from previous gravel pit or other industrial excavation operations. The sediments generally consist of various saturated materials from very soft clay to very loose silty sand. Given the nature of the undesirable engineering properties of WPS, design and construction activities involved in such situations present quite a challenge to engineers and contractors. This paper presents a case study for a highway embankment constructed over WPS. To improve the engineering properties of the soft soils for the proposed embankment, prefabricated vertical (PV) wick drains in combination with staged construction of the embankment were implemented to accommodate the anticipated settlement and to meet the required minimum factor of safety for the embankment slope stability. With extensive field and laboratory studies of the soil encountered, a relationship between effective overburden pressure and undrained shear strength was established to model the soil shear strength gain from the consolidation in the field. Slope stability analyses were conducted to develop the design in order to provide feasible method for the construction.
