Abstract
An integrated dual-mode ultrasonic probe capable of transmitting and receiving the longitudinal (LW) and shear waves (SW) simultaneously has been designed and developed for characterizing viscous liquids. In the probe design, two factors were theoretically investigated: impedance matching between the probe substrate and viscous liquid; and mode conversion efficiency from the LW to SW. The probe developed had a peak frequency and 6-dB bandwidth of 2.3 MHz and 3.0 MHz (130%) for the LW, respectively, and those of 1.5 MHz and 1.8 MHz (120%) for the SW, respectively. The probe was tested with a selected silicone fluid and its capability of measuring the longitudinal and shear properties of the viscous liquid was successfully demonstrated.
