Dans la foulée d'un développement technologique réalisé dans le sud des États-Unis au cours de la dernière décennie 1 , une nouvelle industrie se manifeste au Québec depuis un peu plus de quatre ans 2 , soit l'extraction du gaz naturel à partir des schistes présents surtout dans le sous-sol de la vallée du Saint-Laurent.Quelle est la valeur de cette ressource dont le gouvernement québécois est propriétaire et quel sera l'impact économique de son exploitation?L'analyse de ces deux questions doit prendre en compte l'intégration du marché de gaz naturel entre le Canada et les États-Unis.Je présente les implications de cette intégration dans la section 1 et je traite du sujet de la valeur de cette ressource dans la section 2 et de celui de l'impact économique de l'exploitation, dans la section 3. Quelques commentaires sur les possibilités de développement de l'industrie au Québec apparaissent en conclusion.
