Abstract
Le recueil de Champfleury, Le réalisme (1857), peut se lire comme l’un des premiers textes de réflexion sur cet enjeu majeur du réalisme qu’est le principe d’indifférenciation. Dans sa défense du peintre Courbet, Champfleury se heurte en effet à la difficulté, qui sera celle de toute l’esthétique moderne, de « sauver » l’oeuvre d’art de l’idée même qu’elle promeut et qui tout à la fois la menace : si, pour reprendre la célèbre formule de Flaubert, « Yvetot vaut Constantinople », alors comment borner ou contenir le théâtre du monde, désormais ouvert à toutes les représentations comme à une toute nouvelle visibilité ? Il s’agit de voir ce que Champfleury, dans ce recueil, s’est trouvé à percevoir, mais également à annoncer, comme mode nouveau d’encadrement (ou de mise en scène) du monde.
