Abstract
Sea buckthorn, Hippophae rhamnoides L., is a member of the family, Elaeagnaceae, is a Eurasian shrub, with wide adaptation and diverse use. The plant bears attractive and edible berries, and is often used as an ornamental. Sea buckthorn is an extremely winter-hardy, drought resistant shrub. It interacts synergistically with other trees and shrubs in mixed stands. It is an excellent source of food and shelter for wildlife. It fixes atmospheric nitrogen, prevents soil erosion and helps to conserve soil moisture. The Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Authority (PFRA), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada introduced sea buckthorn from only one Siberian population to the Canadian prairies in the early 1930s as a shelterbelt plant. Since all sea buckthorn populations in the 336Canadian prairies are derived from the progeny of a single Siberian sample, the prairie populations of this introduced species are expected to have limited genetic diversity due to the founder effect. One of the objectives of this research was to determine the amount of genetic diversity in local populations of sea buckthorn in comparison with that of native species of the family Elaeagnaceae in the prairies. The second objective was to determine the utility of sea buckthorn as an agroforestry plant in this region.
