Abstract
The relationships between health‐related quality of life (QOL) in cardiac rehabilitation patients and coping, optimism, and social support were investigated. Fifty cardiac patients completed questionnaires at the beginning of their cardiac rehabilitation programs (Time 1) and again 3 months later (Time 2). Results showed that (a) palliative and emotional preoccupation coping were negatively related to QOL at Times 1 and 2, (b) social support and optimism were positively related to QOL at Times 1 and 2, (c) coping and QOL remained stable over time, (d) optimism at Time 1 was related to greater mental functioning at Time 2, and (e) coping mediated the relationship between optimism and QOL at Times 1 and 2.
