Two transects through the Oyashio-Kuroshio frontal region were made off the coast of Japan using a towed CTD-fluorometer (Aquashuttle).These show numerous patches of elevated chlorophyll concentration adjacent to the Kuroshio front.In particular, a few patches are found in the main stream of the Kuroshio.Making use of the Temperature and Salinity (T-S) properties of the identified patches, the origin of the patches is inferred.It is confirmed that the patches appearing in the Kuroshio are not from the adjacent coastal waters.Their T-S properties are similar to those in the upstream portion of the Kuroshio.These facts suggest that the elevated level of chlorophyll in the patches arise because of mixing that occurs while the Kuroshio passes over the Izu Ridge.The patches found in the main stream of the Kuroshio are transported to the Kuroshio extension, which is the nursery ground for many pelagic larval fish.These patches, if they appear during the spawning season, may provide food for these larval fish.Thus mixing due to bottom topography and islands of the Izu Ridge may play an important role for the survival of larval fish downstream, in the region of the Kuroshio extension. Ils montrent de nombreuses parcelles d'eau aux concentrations leves de chlorophylle adjacentes au front du Kuroshio. En particulier, quelques parcelles d'eau ont t trouves dans le courant principal du Kuroshio. En se servant des proprits de temprature et de salinit (T-S) des parcelles identifies, on dduit l'origine des parcelles d'eau. Il est confirm que les parcelles apparaissant dans le Kuroshio ne proviennent pas des eaux ctires adjacentes.Leurs proprits de T-S sont semblables celles que l'on observe dans la partie amont du Kuroshio.Ces faits suggrent que le niveau lev de chlorophylle dans la parcelle d'eau est attribuable au mlange qui se produit au moment o le Kuroshio passe au-dessus de la crte d'Izu.Les parcelles d'eau trouves dans le courant principal du Kuroshio sont transportes dans l'extension du Kuroshio, qui est l'aire d'alevinage de plusieurs larves de poissons plagiques.Si ces parcelles d'eau apparaissent durant la priode du frai, elles peuvent fournir de la nourriture ces larves de poissons.Donc, le mlange caus par la topographie du fond marin et par les les de la crte d'Izu peut jouer un rle important pour la survie des larves de poissons en aval, dans la rgion de l'extension du Kuroshio.
