Abstract

Le concept d’empire polarise la réflexion sur les relations internationales contemporaines, principalement autour de la politique étrangère américaine après le 11 septembre. Une façon d’investir cette actualité en termes critiques revient à mettre en perspective l’idée impériale comme constitutive d’une irréductibilité des rapports de pouvoir entre les nations. À travers sa propre pensée et ses effets spéculaires sur le génie politique « néoconservateur », Machiavel est discrètement, furtivement mais intimement, au coeur d’un tel investissement. Avec lui, la forme impériale de conduite de l’action internationale passe pour la réponse logique la plus éprouvée du politique face à l’inépuisable incertitude du monde. Elle révèle, par la même occasion, sa propre fragilité, celle d’un qui-vive permanent pour lequel il n’est de meilleur « remède » que celui qui réduit le rapport aux autres à une pure intelligence stratégique.
