Abstract
Le monument des Braves, inauguré à Québec en 1863, célèbre la bataille de Sainte-Foy, dernière victoire remportée en 1760 par la France et les Canadiens dans la guerre de la Conquête. Son inauguration est l’une des premières de la vague commémorative qui a déferlé sur le Canada entre 1850 et 1930. Le dévoilement de ce monument, les discours qu’il a inspirés, les topiques qu’il a reflétés et ses réappropriations illustrent le travail ininterrompu de la mémoire dans ses expressions savantes, ses représentations et ses usages sociopolitiques. Nous examinerons ici comment ce monument s’est retrouvé au coeur d’un discours qui a émoussé les aspérités de la Conquête et dénaturé l’explication historique de la bataille de 1760.
