Abstract
La société civile peut-elle être le lieu d’un autre agir économique? Cet article se propose de répondre à cette question en interrogeant le modèle français d’économie sociale et solidaire. Interprétant ce modèle dans la perspective d’une tradition politique négligée, la tradition associationniste française, il rappelle l’originalité de son projet de politisation et de démocratisation de l’économie à partir d’engagements citoyens. Il en souligne aussi l’échec relatif, l’élan associationniste, qui avait constitué la première réaction de la société contre les dérèglements occasionnés par la diffusion du marché, cédant progressivement la place à l’intervention de l’État. L’histoire récente montre néanmoins que l’économie sociale et solidaire peut être porteuse, face à la corporate governance, d’un modèle alternatif de développement, d’une économie et d’une politique de la société civile opposant à l’autonomisation de la sphère marchande les exigences d’une subordination du marché aux exigences mêmes de la démocratie.
