Abstract
La question du passage est inhérente à l’état de jeune fille, lequel à la fin du XIX e siècle est envisagé comme une transition vers le mariage et le statut de femme accomplie. Or, plusieurs héroïnes naturalistes demeurent figées dans cette phase par définition intermédiaire. Celle qu’Edmond de Goncourt présente dans Chérie (1884) apparaît tiraillée entre un désir la poussant vers l’avant et des blocages entravant sa progression. Cette tension, mise en espace par le biais des mouvements de Chérie (avancées, arrêts) et des lieux qu’elle investit (couloirs, culs-de-sac), fait du corps en développement de la jeune fille le siège de forces antagonistes, exacerbées par une éducation qui la propulse vers le destin de femme tout en la retenant dans la pudeur. La dynamique du parcours de cette héroïne met ainsi en lumière un savoir à propos de et pour la jeune fille du Second Empire.
