Abstract Let F be a field of characteristic p ≠ 2 and G a group without 2-elements having an involution *. Write <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <m:msup> <m:mrow> <m:mo>(</m:mo> <m:mi>F</m:mi> <m:mi>G</m:mi> <m:mo>)</m:mo> </m:mrow> <m:mo>+</m:mo> </m:msup> </m:math> $(FG)^+$ for the set of elements in the group ring F G that are symmetric with respect to the induced involution. In the present note, we show that if G is finite and <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <m:msup> <m:mrow> <m:mo>(</m:mo> <m:mi>F</m:mi> <m:mi>G</m:mi> <m:mo>)</m:mo> </m:mrow> <m:mo>+</m:mo> </m:msup> </m:math> $(FG)^+$ is Lie metabelian, then G is nilpotent. Based on this result, we deduce that if G is torsion, p ≠ 3 and <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <m:msup> <m:mrow> <m:mo>(</m:mo> <m:mi>F</m:mi> <m:mi>G</m:mi> <m:mo>)</m:mo> </m:mrow> <m:mo>+</m:mo> </m:msup> </m:math> $(FG)^+$ is Lie metabelian, then G must be abelian. This extends a result of Levin and Rosenberger.
