Abstract
Jusqu'à la publication des travaux d'Alan MacNeil et de Rusty Bitterman, l'agriculture des Maritimes a eu mauvaise réputation. Presque rien n'a été publié récemment concernant l'agriculture du Nouveau-Brunswick pour examiner la véracité de cette image. Ce texte examine l'agriculture pratiquée par une communauté francophone du nord-ouest du Nouveau-Brunswick en 1860. La majorité des fermes de cette région produisaient des quantités largement supérieures à celles requises pour la subsistance. Les surplus étaient inégalement répartis, mais certains fermiers pratiquaient visiblement une agriculture commerciale. Finalement, l'agriculture de la vallée de la rivière Saint-Jean se compare favorablement à celle de l'Ontario, du Québec, de la Nouvelle-Angleterre, et avec celle des régions les plus productives de la Nouvelle-Ecosse à la même époque. Seules les fermes de l'Ouest américain semblent avoir été plus productives.
