Abstract
La fécondité de la population canadienne-française est célèbre. Parmi les populations connues, « celle qui a eu la fécondité la plus élevée paraît être celle de la province de Québec vers 1850 » . Depuis cette époque le Québec s'est urbanisé et industrialisé. Le comportement des familles en matière de fécondité a beaucoup changé. Le nombre moyen d'enfants par famille complète, de 8.39 qu'il était au début du XVIIIe siècle, passe en 1850 à 7.96 et doit se situer actuellement aux environs de 2.5. Il ressort de cette constatation que la population canadienne-française cesse de se singulariser et adopte le comportement démographique des sociétés modernes. Si nous connaissons les points de départ et d'arrivée de ce mouvement, par contre nous ne savons pas autre chose des diverses étapes de cette évolution. Quand a-t-elle commencé? Où a-t-elle pris naissance? Seules des recherches historiques permettront de répondre à cette question. Sans avoir la prétention de résoudre ces problèmes, l'étude entreprise ici se situe dans cette perspective.
