Cet article traite de l'épuisement professionnel en milieu policier, plus précisément de la question de son étiologie. Si la plupart des causes possibles d'un burnout ont été largement étudiées, celle traitant des valeurs n'a été qu'esquissée jusqu'à présent. La première partie de l'article rappelle les différentes façons dont les valeurs, personnelles et institutionnelles, peuvent concourir au développement d'un burnout. La deuxième partie présente de façon concrète la manière dont ce syndrome peut apparaître chez un policier, en se basant sur une histoire fictive utilisée dans la formation des policiers, histoire construite sur la base de différentes situations réelles rapportées au fil du temps à des psychologues travaillant en milieu policier. La question des valeurs appelle une lecture éthique des situations rencontrées. La troisième partie de l’article examine en quoi l’éthique, en tant que processus de compréhension des conflits de normes et de valeurs surgissant dans la vie en société, peut être considérée comme un outil réflexif et préventif de l’épuisement professionnel. Pour appuyer la réflexion théorique, les auteurs présentent certains mécanismes et outils utilisés dans une démarche éthique institutionnelle concrète, amorcée dans un corps de police.
