Abstract
Dans cet article, les auteurs analysent les conditions sociales du développement des sciences biologiques au Québec et, plus précisément, celles qui ont présidé à l'organisation de leur enseignement au sein du système universitaire francophone. Il semble bien que cette institutionnalisation, qui est relativement «tardive», s'est inscrite dans une conjoncture idéologique et aussi économique peu favorable et qu'elle n'a pas été supportée par un large mouvement au sein de l'ensemble de la classe supérieure francophone. Mais les sciences n'en trouvent pas moins réunies, entre les années 1920 et 1945, un certain nombre de conditions qui, bien que fragiles, permettent leur premier développement institutionnel : d'une part, celles-ci apparaissent alors de plus en plus indispensables à la « conquête du territoire » et au développement des ressources naturelles et reçoivent un appui plus substantiel du gouvernement provincial ; d'autre part, elles tendent à constituer pour divers groupes sociaux un moyen soit de maintenir ou améliorer leur position sociale, soit d'effectuer des reconversions sociales.
