Abstract
L’occultation progressive de la publicité des exécutions dans la France du tournant XIXe-XXe siècle, jusqu’à leur déroulement dans la cour d’enceinte des prisons, est un phénomène qui nous informe sur la nature du processus de civilisation. La dépublicisation du rituel exécutionnaire passe par la réduction de sa pompe, de sa durée, et son arraisonnement par l’espace pénitentiaire. Prise dans les politiques d’hygiénisation de la ville, la guillotine paraît délivrer une mort « sale » et sanglante qui donnerait le goût de la violence et devrait être ôtée à la vue. Cette « formalisation » révèle donc en double part le renoncement par le pouvoir à une technologie politique jugée inefficace et l’émergence de sensibilités s’accommodant mal désormais de la présence d’une effusion de sang dans l’espace public.
