Abstract

Cinq sites, disposés sur un transect bathymétrique de la partie distale du plateau de Demerara, ont été étudiés lors de la campagne 207 d'ODP. Des sédiments essentiellement terrigènes (siltites, grès) d'âge Albien sont les plus anciens forés et constituent vraisemblablement le sommet de la série synrift. Ils sont recouverts par des argilites laminées du Cénomanien–Santonien, riches en matière organique d'origine marine, qui se sont accumulées sur une rampe en cours d'approfondissement par subsidence thermique. Des lacunes correspondant au Campanien inférieur semblent refléter la séparation finale du plateau de Demerara de l'Afrique et la mise en place de communications océaniques profondes entre les parties centrale et méridionale de l'Atlantique. La craie qui s'est accumulée par la suite, du Crétacé terminal à l'Oligocène, contient des assemblages riches et diversifiés en plancton calcaire, ainsi que deux intervalles d'enrichissement en radiolaires (Campanien supérieur et Éocène moyen). Une surface érosive s'est développée durant l'Oligocène supérieur–Miocène inférieur. Des courants sous-marins ont vraisemblablement empêché, depuis le Miocène, la sédimentation pélagique sur les sites intermédiaires et profonds.
