Abstract
Comme le pays dont elle est la métropole, Montréal connaît, dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, des changements profonds, plus ou moins liés à son industrialisation. Dans cet article, nous avons voulu immobiliser cette transformation en 1871 pour examiner les points suivants : la ville et ses groupes ethniques, l'occupation de l'espace urbain par les classes sociales et les industries. Cette analyse repose sur les données du recensement de 1871, traitées par ordinateur sur la base de 63 îlots répartis à l'intérieur des neuf quartiers montréalais.
