Abstract
La question des rapports qu'entretiennent tradition et modernité dans l'histoire sociale de la province d'avant les années soixante est au cœur de l'historiographie et de la sociographie québécoises. Du haut de la Révolution tranquille, le Québec a souvent fait l'objet d'une lecture rétrospective, imprégnée du paradigme de la «grande noirceur». Les aspects modernistes du discours social ont alors été soit ignorés, soit posés en relation d'extériorité par rapport au traditionalisme sensé former la trame véritable de la représentation sociale. Le discours de l'épiscopat québécois, restituée ici à partir des mandements des évêques (1935-1960), constitue un lieu d'observation privilégié pour l'étude de l'articulation de ces deux univers de la représentation. Nous montrerons que les grandes notions de la modernité sont significativement présentes dans les textes, mais au prix d'une intégration qui en menace les fondements traditionalistes et religieux.
