The role of penetration depth in optical tuning of a photonic bandgap of a semiconductor periodic structure

Abstract
Changes in optical transmission due to optically generated free carriers in a semiconductor periodic lattice is studied in the case where the absorption coefficient of the material is tuned. At constant pumping intensity, it is found that the penetration depth of the optical field plays a significant role in the amount of switching, the optimum lying when the penetration depth 1/α is about 35% of the total crystal length. The effect is invariant with crystal thickness and largely dominated by phase shifts inside layers rather than variations of Fresnel coefficients at each interface. Important consequences for practical use and optical control of photonic crystals are discussed.
