Abstract
Harry Pope may not have been humble, but he was honest. In this memoir, published two years after his death, Pope speaks with the cocksure tone of Field Marshal Montgomery; he always knows what should have been done and he doles out the criticism in spades. But, in recounting his experiences as a Canadian platoon commander during the Italian Campaign of World War Two, as a rifle company commander in Korea and as an officer on peacetime service, Pope is as hard on himself as he is on anyone else. That allows him to write freely: "Criticizing myself as I do, I have no reason to be shy of criticizing others" (p. ix).
