L’instauration, à la fin des années soixante, d’une mixité généralisée du système scolaire français a permis l’essor remarquable des scolarités féminines et s’est accompagnée d’une plus grande réussite scolaire des filles. Pourtant, cette réussite demeure paradoxale : bien que plus précoces et plus brillantes que les garçons, les filles restent relativement absentes des filières d’excellence où s’affirme la priorité accordée à l’enseignement des maths et de la physique. Cette absence est généralement expliquée par une inaptitude des femmes à la pratique des sciences. Cet article vise à montrer comment la construction sociale de cette inaptitude est un effet de la domination masculine et quels sont les enjeux sociaux de la pénétration des bastions masculins par un nombre, certes encore trop faible, mais en même temps non négligeable de femmes.
