Abstract
RÉSUMÉ Notamment par l’interdiction au condamné des derniers sacrements et de la sépulture en terre consacrée, le rituel de l’exécution dans la France d’Ancien Régime paraît ambivalent et contradictoire en ce qu’il exclut le supplicié de la communauté religieuse, alors qu’un confesseur est pourtant admis à ses côtés. Les rapports entretenus entre la parole, le salut, le condamné et le confesseur deviennent ainsi fondamentaux pour comprendre les liens, dans la culture juridique, entre la justice du roi et celle de Dieu à l’époque moderne. Au carrefour de la littérature baroque, des archives judiciaires et des livres de pénitence et de consolation, se révèle la place que prend le confesseur depuis la contre-réforme dans les migrations du sacré judiciaire aux XVII e et XVIII e siècles.
