Abstract
A enfermagem vem incorporando a promoção da saúde como elemento integrante de sua área de ação, atuando sobre os determinantes do processo saúde-doença-cuidado. Objetivou-se analisar a evolução histórica do conceito de promoção da saúde expresso nas cartas de promoção da saúde. Utilizou-se a análise de conceito, na perspectiva evolucionária de Rodgers, destacando os atributos essenciais, eventos antecedentes, eventos consequentes e conceitos relacionados. Os resultados apontam que o conceito de promoção da saúde vem se ampliando, influenciado pelos movimentos internacionais, por reduzir as iniquidades. A evolução da formulação oficial em Ottawa até os últimos documentos foi seu enriquecimento, adotando estratégias fundamentais para a promoção da saúde, como defesa de saúde, até identificação de ações e compromissos para atingir os determinantes de saúde em um mundo globalizado, em Bangkok. A utilização de um modelo para analisar conceito proporcionou clarificação, possibilitando a elaboração de formulações teóricas nas áreas da saúde, principalmente a enfermagem.
