Abstract
In his classic study of the Black Sox Scandal, Eight Men Out, Eliot Asinof portrays the banned eight as victims of a corrupt system in which everyone made money but them. Similarly, in his 1955 novel, Man on Spikes, Asinof traces the fictional career of outfielder Mike Kutner, a "never-was" whose potential is stifled by a corrupt system as he toils in the minors. In each case, players are victims of business interests who richly profit from their unrewarded talents on the field. Given the multimillion-dollar contracts of today's stars, one would think it nearly impossible to portray players as victims, fictionally or otherwise, but with Off-Season, Asinof demonstrates in its tale of "Black Jack" Cagle, star pitcher of the Los Angeles Dodgers, that the game today can cost a man more than money if he is not careful.
