Abstract
L'idéal encyclopédique, qui est un idéal de totalité, se trouve pris dans quatre contradictions : celle du réel et du symbolique (I 'encyclopédisme voudrait oublier que les mots ne sont pas les choses), celle de l'unité et de la multiplicité (comment unifier un réel foncièrement divers ?), celle de l'exhaustivité et du choix (il n'y a pas de choix sans principe d'exclusion), celle de la fermeture et de l'ouverture (d'un réel qui court toujours). Ces contradictions ne peuvent être résolues : elles constituent la limite de l'encyclopédisme mais aussi sa grandeur.
