Abstract
Cet article a pour objet d’étude les deux textes que Genet a écrits lors de la Convention nationale démocrate de 1968, « Les membres de l’Assemblée » et « Un salut aux cent mille étoiles ». Il est axé sur la question de l’adresse : non seulement Genet s’adresse-t-il dans ces textes explicitement, au vocatif, aux Américains, mais c’est l’occasion insolite de pouvoir s’adresser directement à eux qui l’a convaincu d’aller aux États-Unis. Quelque directe que semble être l’adresse, ce sont des textes écrits, adressés à un lecteur et non à un auditeur, qui en plus étaient destinés dès l’origine à la traduction. Il s’agit alors d’une adresse « directe » aux Américains marquée doublement par l’indirection, par la médiation. Le rapport hostile de Genet à son nouvel ennemi de choix est caractérisé par une crudité manifeste qui atteint une violence extrême dans le deuxième article. En explorant le soin avec lequel Genet cible son destinataire américain, l’article dégage la façon dont son écriture, avec toute l’adresse qui lui est particulière, combine cette crudité avec une grande subtilité.
