In this paper, a dynamic model for a power-split gear based hybrid electric vehicle is developed. This model provides a platform for performance analysis of vehicle components including efficiency analysis. The developed model uses a vehicle controller, which operates the drive-train in different modes based on the driving conditions, battery state-of-charge and other parameters. The transient response of the drive-train is studied under different driving conditions and different modes of operation. The results can be used to study the power flow in the drive-train and the pattern of battery usage under different driving conditions and different vehicle control strategies. Using this model the feasibility of using different battery chemistries can be studied.
