Plusieurs études ont été menées dans le but de déterminer la signification des allusions mythologiques dans le roman À la recherche du temps perdu de Marcel Proust. Certaines d’entre elles se sont particulièrement intéressées au mythe d’Orphée et à sa résonnance singulière dans l’imaginaire proustien. Mais peu de spécialistes ont questionné les influences du mouvement religieux associé à ce poète légendaire : l’orphisme. Proust n’est pas le seul auteur à s’être réapproprié le mythe orphique ; les tenants du romantisme et du symbolisme en ont fait une véritable figure de proue. L’auteur de la Recherche possède l’avantage, à l’orée de la modernité, de pouvoir embrasser leurs visions et d’y sélectionner soigneusement ce qui correspond à son dessein esthétique. Mais ce dessein est-il expressément orphique ? Pour le savoir, nous nous proposons de revisiter l’oeuvre de Proust en examinant les sources antiques et les inspirations contemporaines ayant alimenté l’intérêt de ce dernier pour la figure d’Orphée ainsi que pour le culte mystique qui y est associé. Nous exposerons ensuite la sélection que Proust opère à travers ces matières premières dans le but de dégager le sens qu’il attribue à son adaptation personnelle de la légende d’Orphée. Subséquemment, nous pourrons vérifier si cette interprétation est cohérente ou non avec les préceptes religieux historiquement attribués au poète mythique. Ainsi, nous saurons si des schèmes orphiques sous-tendent réellement la création narrative de Proust.
