Historien et chrétien, Jean Delumeau s’est faite connaître par ses travaux sur la culture et la société à l’époque moderne. Ses ouvrages, notamment La Civilisation de la Renaissance (1967), Naissance et affirmation de la Réforme (1968), Le Catholicisme entre Luther et Voltaire (1971), La Peur en Occident (1978), Le Péché et la peur (1983), ont ouvert de nouvelles voies à l’historiographie religieuse et à l’étude des mentalités. Dans la ligne de son engagement chrétien, il a publié Le Christianisme va-t-il mourir? (1977) et, récemment, un Ce que je crois (1985). Le 18 octobre 1986, il recevait un doctorat d’honneur en histoire de l’Université de Sherbrooke. La SCHEC a profité de son passage pour lui demander de prononcer la grande conférence publique du Congrès. Cette conférence a soulevé plusieurs questions et a été fort appréciée; nous sommes heureux de vous en livrer le texte.
