Abstract
La présence récurrente de personnages de comédiens sur la scène, le portraitqu’ils brossent d’eux-mêmes aussi bien que les proposqu’ils tiennent sur leur art (au sujet de la déclamation, du geste, de lavoix) et sur leur profession (travailler pour la Foire plutôt que pour laComédie-Française, remplir un emploi, dévoiler les ficelles du métier), nouslaissent penser que se construit — tout au long de la premièremoitié du XVIIIe siècle — une véritableréflexion en action sur l’art du comédien. Nous étudierons comment cediscours esthétique se dessine de pièce en pièce chez Lesage, Fuzelier,d’Orneval, Pannard, Favart notamment, condamnant le jeu outré et figé du« Romain » (le Comédien Français), tissant par contrastel’éloge du naturel et de la spontanéité, qu’incarne idéalementle comédien de la Foire, capable d’associer tout à la fois dans son jeula pantomime, la danse et le chant.
