Abstract
Très près de Mgr Bourget qui les avait fait venir à Montréal en 1842, les Jésuites appuyèrent constamment le second évêque de Montréal dans ses efforts pour instaurer dans son diocèse une société de chrétienté et faire de Montréal « une petite Rome ». Ce projet de société qui avait d’abord été conçu par son prédécesseur, Mgr Lartigue, se heurta très tôt à un autre projet de société, de nature laïque, défendu par les esprits avant-gardistes de l’Institut canadien de Montréal, héritiers de la pensée de Louis-Joseph Papineau. Au terme d’une lutte acharnée, le projet de société de Mgr Bourget triompha, grâce notamment au soutien inconditionnel des Jésuites, avant de s’étendre graduellement à l’ensemble de la province.
