Abstract
Ce qui suit est le texte d’un discours prononcé le 17 août 2009 à la conférence « La pérennité du peuple acadien : défis et opportunités », parrainée par la Société nationale de l’Acadie dans le cadre du Congrès mondial acadien de 2009 à Tracadie-Sheila (Nouveau-Brunswick). Cette allocution liminaire a été conçue pour planter des balises, c’est-à-dire pour éclairer les congressistes et orienter leurs débats. Dans ce texte, je tente de frayer une voie médiane entre les extrémités qui marquent le catéchisme acadien — entre l’épopée et le traité, entre l’exultation et la morosité. Et c’est en tant qu’historien que je m’interpose — celui qui sait la science, mais qui se pose en poète. Bref, me voici, muni d’une foi raisonnée.
