Abstract

Scholarly literature identifies a distinctive fast food approach to labour management. Much of the archetypal ‘ McJob ’ image of industry work arises from this approach. The strategy has high‐profile elements which include fervent opposition to unions, scientific management, and use of human resource principles which attach no importance to employee preference. It is often assumed that the attitudes and opinions of industry pioneers such as R ay K roc and H arlan S anders are ubiquitous among modern fast food managers. However, this study presents survey data suggesting that fast food outlet managers are not necessarily committed to, nor do they apply, their employer's approach.
