Abstract
Ce texte argumente en faveur d’une perspective instrumentaliste de l’ethnicité au Machrek. La définition de l’ethnicité et la spécificité des frontières ethniques dans cette région sont discutées. Il est proposé d’identifier les processus par lesquels des problématiques qui ne relèvent pas de l’ethnicité finissent par renforcer des frontières ethniques. Deux exemples de ces processus sont discutés. L’impact de la vision de l’identité collective proposée par les mouvements nationalistes et islamistes sur la définition et sur le renforcement des frontières ethniques est aussi abordé. Enfin l’instrumentalisation de l’ethnicité par des acteurs locaux et internationaux est discutée, et brièvement illustrée par des exemples.
